WRITTEN RECAP

The party has climbed through the Shadowed Spire and reached the level where the mystery stops being historical.

Saraphina Thorn is here.

Her armor was found below in a pool of blood, but her body lies on an altar higher in the tower. The Gloomstalkers have taken Hayben’s old friend and made her part of whatever ritual has been unfolding inside the Spire.

The party now has two goals: destroy the cult leadership and get Saraphina out.

The final levels are filled with shadow creatures and cultists, and the fighting becomes the culmination of everything the group has learned since Riverhaven’s Healing Waters first began failing. The Gloomstalkers are no longer mysterious people hiding beneath a sanctuary. Their leaders are in front of the party, surrounded by the same shadow powers that corrupted the ancient ruins and twisted the remnants of Thorgrim Iron Spire.

The battle is long enough that the table has time for the usual mixture of tactical planning, bad jokes and moments when everybody briefly forgets which effect belongs to whom.

Eventually the cult leadership falls.

The Shadowed Spire has been broken.

The heroes recover Saraphina’s body and return to Riverhaven carrying more books, relics and historical evidence than anyone originally expected to find inside an evil tower. The collection includes material about the Gloomstalkers and their relationship to the old Steelwind Dragons—enough to begin reconstructing how deeply the two histories became entangled.

Most importantly, Saraphina is brought to the Sanctuary of the Healing Waters.

The clerics are able to raise her.

Hayben’s friend returns from death with information the party badly needs. Her investigation confirms that the Gloomstalker threat had penetrated places where people in Riverhaven either could not or would not see it. The group’s victory at the Spire has removed a major part of that threat, but it has not solved every problem around the region.

Still, when they return to the Silverfish Inn, they return as heroes.

For once, people actually know what they accomplished.

The celebration does not last very long.

A concerned local approaches with another problem. The nearby town of Ellen has gone quiet. Communication has stopped. Nobody knows why, and people with family there are becoming increasingly worried.

It sounds straightforward compared with a disappearing magical tower.

That should have been the first warning.

The party discusses the request in the inn. During the conversation, one member notices that somebody nearby is paying a little too much attention. The strangers do not appear to be concerned citizens. They appear to be watching the party.

The group accepts the Ellen job anyway.

On the road, the watchers make their move.

At a crossroads, armed attackers wait in ambush.

The party is suspicious enough to recognize the trap before completely walking into it, which leads to the wonderfully Old Dudes question of whether they are being ambushed or whether they are now ambushing the ambush.

Combat begins before anyone settles the terminology.

The attackers are organized, equipped and clearly not random roadside thieves. One fighter is blinded. Archers and spellcasters use prepared positions. Sspaa takes advantage of the terrain and his ability to disappear into cover, trying to strike from the shadows while the rest of the party draws attention.

The battle will continue into the next session, but one fact is already obvious.

Somebody knew the heroes were leaving Riverhaven.

Somebody cared enough to stop them.

At the top of the Spire, the investigation finally collides with the people responsible. The party finds Saraphina's body and fights the Gloomstalker leaders controlling the site. The battle matters because it is both a tactical victory and a chance for Hayben to confront living evidence that his old disgrace was part of a story larger than he understood.

The Old Dudes then refuse to accept that finding Saraphina dead is the end of her part in the campaign. They bring her back to Riverhaven and use the Healing Waters—now cleansed enough to serve their intended purpose—to restore her. The same sanctuary that began the campaign as a place of corruption becomes the place where one of Hayben's most important witnesses is returned to life. That symmetry is not lost on the party, even if the table also spends time making sure the rules actually allow everything they are trying to do.

Saraphina's return gives Hayben a path toward clearing his name and points the group toward Elin. The party leaves Riverhaven with a more concrete enemy network to follow, only to discover that the road itself is dangerous. The ambush waiting for them turns the next stage of the campaign into a pursuit before they even reach their destination.

The session therefore closes the first major Gloomstalker arc and immediately opens the next threat. The party has defeated the cult leaders in the Shadowed Spire, recovered Saraphina and returned to Riverhaven with proof that their investigation was right from the beginning.

The action has another layer as well. The party reaches the top of the Shadowed Spire, finds Saraphina dead and defeats the Gloomstalker leaders holding the position. The group has to learn the place while moving through it, and that makes every new clue immediately practical. A symbol can become a key. A prisoner can become a witness. A strange relic can be the reason the next door opens—or the reason everybody suddenly needs a saving throw. Riverhaven has trained the party to treat exploration as part of the danger instead of the quiet time between fights.

When the fighting starts, the fight caps several sessions of climbing and gives the party a clear leadership target instead of another anonymous cult patrol. The heroes increasingly work as a real unit rather than five or six separate character sheets. The front line buys room for archers and spellcasters, the scouts try to keep the group from walking blind into the next threat, and healing is saved for the moments when somebody is one bad hit from disappearing. The exact plan changes from room to room, but the basic trust underneath it is becoming one of the party's strongest advantages.

Naturally, none of that prevents the table from wandering into its own kind of trouble. Once Saraphina is recovered, the discussion shifts rapidly from looting and combat to whether the rules and Healing Waters can actually bring her back. That is the Old Dudes rhythm by now: somebody makes the sensible observation, somebody else makes the joke, and a third person pushes the button while the discussion is still happening. The humor never really stops the adventure. Most of the time it is happening at exactly the same moment the characters are making decisions that could get them killed.

Underneath the jokes, the character stakes keep moving. Restoring Saraphina is crucial for Hayben because she can speak to the truth of the events that destroyed his reputation. Riverhaven has become very good at bringing old choices back around. A weapon found months earlier can suddenly matter to a new enemy. An NPC rescued in one arc can become the person who explains the next. A disgrace, curse, vision or bloodline that began as backstory can eventually become the reason the whole party is standing in a particular room.

The larger pattern also gets harder to ignore. Using the cleansed Healing Waters to revive her turns the sanctuary from the campaign’s first corrupted site into part of its first major restoration. At first the heroes could treat the Gloomstalkers, the Steelwind Dragoons, the Aegis Arcanum, Umbraxion, the infernal prisons and the planar breaches as separate mysteries. With every new site, that becomes less believable. Riverhaven was protected by overlapping systems and orders, and somebody—or several somebodies—has been finding the weak points in all of them.

But victory has made them visible.

Episode Eight ends at a crossroads on the way to Ellen, with a prepared enemy force waiting in the road and the party fighting its way out of an ambush that may have been arranged before they ever left the Silverfish Inn.

The Gloomstalkers may have been beaten.

Someone else has started paying attention.
