WRITTEN RECAP

With the Crimson Flame finally in hand, the party returns to the Blackshade Forest and heads for the tower that has been haunting the edges of the campaign since the Warrior’s Trial.

The Shadowed Spire is real.

That alone matters. Historical clues suggested that the tower appears when Gloomstalker influence rises and disappears when that influence is broken. Reaching it is therefore confirmation that the cult’s return is not merely a handful of isolated cells around Riverhaven. Something old is rebuilding itself.

The Crimson Flame allows the party to pass the magic protecting the Spire, burning away the barrier that concealed the entrance.

The first floor is a library.

For several members of the group, this is almost more dangerous than a room full of monsters.

The chamber is filled with shelves, strange volumes and fish-like librarians who are not pleased to have adventurers wandering through their collection. The party fights its way through the defenders while simultaneously trying to determine which books might be worth stealing, reading or adding to somebody’s permanent list of things they will definitely investigate later.

Eventually they discover a concealed route upward.

The second level changes the tone immediately.

A large circular chamber is decorated with statues associated with the Steelwind Dragons, the old military order connected to General Thorgrim Iron Spire. At the center lies a pool of blood.

Inside it is armor Hayben recognizes.

It belonged to Saraphina Thorn, his longtime friend from his military past.

Her body is missing.

The discovery turns the Spire from an ancient mystery into something personal. Saraphina had been investigating the same forces that destroyed Hayben’s reputation years earlier. Finding her armor in a pool of blood inside a Gloomstalker tower strongly suggests that she made it farther into the truth than anyone realized.

Before the party can investigate properly, shadow creatures attack from the darkness.

The battle is violent and disorienting, but the group eventually clears the chamber. Searching afterward reveals an unusual portrait and, behind it, a hidden entrance.

The secret room is an office belonging to General Thorgrim Iron Spire himself.

The party has been following the general’s legacy since the buried ruins beneath Riverhaven. His Warrior’s Trial armed them. His history pointed toward the Spire. Now they are standing inside his private chamber.

Unfortunately, Thorgrim is still there.

Or something wearing what remains of him is.

A wraith-like form of the old general rises along with other shadow creatures. The encounter nearly gets away from the group when one especially powerful shadowy monster proves considerably nastier than expected. The table briefly suspects that the DM may have selected something a little too enthusiastic for the party’s level.

Somehow, they survive anyway.

When the fighting ends, the group recovers Thorgrim’s sword. The weapon is more than treasure; it is another direct piece of the ancient war against the Gloomstalkers. Eth ultimately takes possession of it.

Saraphina’s armor is recovered as well.

Because no solemn discovery can remain solemn for long, the group immediately discusses who can fit into the missing woman’s armor and whether the extra room around the chest could be used to store loaves of bread.

The search continues.

A final staircase rises from Thorgrim’s office toward another level of the Spire. The party has already fought through a library, uncovered evidence of Saraphina’s fate, defeated shadow guardians and confronted the corrupted remnant of one of Riverhaven’s greatest historical warriors.

But the tower is not finished with them.

The biggest revelation is not a single magic weapon or clue.

It is the connection between generations.

Thorgrim Iron Spire fought this darkness long ago. His order created trials and left behind relics. Saraphina followed the same trail in the present and apparently died doing it. Now Hayben and the rest of the party are literally climbing through the remains of both stories at once.

The Crimson Flame does what the party hoped: it lets them breach the barrier protecting the Shadowed Spire. Inside, the place is less an ordinary tower than a preserved piece of a dead order. An enchanted library and its bizarre fishlike custodians provide information without making the experience feel remotely normal, while statues and symbols connected to the Steelwind Dragoons begin tying the site to Riverhaven's military history.

The exploration turns personal when the group discovers signs connected to Saraphina Thorn, a figure from Hayben's past. A pool of blood, familiar armor and hidden records in Thorgrim's office make it clear that the Spire is not only about ancient cult activity. Someone has been using old grudges and old institutions as part of the present conspiracy. Hayben's history, which until now has mostly been background, is becoming part of the central plot.

Thorgrim himself does not provide answers peacefully. His wraith has to be confronted, and the battle leaves the party with more relics and more questions. The tower keeps drawing them upward, each floor turning history into something increasingly immediate. By the time they find the stairs leading farther up, Saraphina is no longer simply a name from Hayben's past. She may be somewhere above them, and the Gloomstalkers are between the party and whatever condition she is in.

The Gloomstalker cult has taken something ancient and made it active again.

The action has another layer as well. The Crimson Flame disperses the Shadowed Spire barrier, revealing an enchanted library, strange fishlike custodians, Steelwind imagery and evidence linked to Saraphina Thorn. The group has to learn the place while moving through it, and that makes every new clue immediately practical. A symbol can become a key. A prisoner can become a witness. A strange relic can be the reason the next door opens—or the reason everybody suddenly needs a saving throw. Riverhaven has trained the party to treat exploration as part of the danger instead of the quiet time between fights.

When the fighting starts, the party alternates investigation with fights in a vertical tower, eventually confronting Thorgrim’s wraith and continuing upward. The heroes increasingly work as a real unit rather than five or six separate character sheets. The front line buys room for archers and spellcasters, the scouts try to keep the group from walking blind into the next threat, and healing is saved for the moments when somebody is one bad hit from disappearing. The exact plan changes from room to room, but the basic trust underneath it is becoming one of the party's strongest advantages.

Naturally, none of that prevents the table from wandering into its own kind of trouble. The bizarre library occupants and the usual uncertainty over which magic item belongs to whom keep the exploration from ever becoming solemn for very long. That is the Old Dudes rhythm by now: somebody makes the sensible observation, somebody else makes the joke, and a third person pushes the button while the discussion is still happening. The humor never really stops the adventure. Most of the time it is happening at exactly the same moment the characters are making decisions that could get them killed.

Underneath the jokes, the character stakes keep moving. Hayben’s past becomes central when Saraphina’s armor and signs of blood appear inside the Spire; this is no longer only Drachen or Umeren chasing old magic. Riverhaven has become very good at bringing old choices back around. A weapon found months earlier can suddenly matter to a new enemy. An NPC rescued in one arc can become the person who explains the next. A disgrace, curse, vision or bloodline that began as backstory can eventually become the reason the whole party is standing in a particular room.

The larger pattern also gets harder to ignore. Thorgrim’s hidden office and the Steelwind material connect the current cult threat to Riverhaven’s military history. At first the heroes could treat the Gloomstalkers, the Steelwind Dragoons, the Aegis Arcanum, Umbraxion, the infernal prisons and the planar breaches as separate mysteries. With every new site, that becomes less believable. Riverhaven was protected by overlapping systems and orders, and somebody—or several somebodies—has been finding the weak points in all of them.

Episode Seven ends with the party standing at the next staircase, preparing to ascend toward what may be the final level of the Shadowed Spire.

Below them are the remains of old defenders.

Above them are the cult leaders responsible for bringing the tower back.

And somewhere in the Spire is the answer to what happened to Saraphina Thorn.
