Eldoria — Episode 9: Defending The Frozen Peak

Episode Nine opens in the middle of the fight at the lunar ruin.

The Old Dudes, Melith and Nulan are battling the Lunar Custodian while Fars's corrupted shard of Nairo hangs over everything. The ritual has one absolute condition: Fars must deliver the killing blow.

That turns a normal combat into a strange exercise in restraint.

Everybody wants to hurt the custodian.

Nobody except Fars is allowed to hurt it quite enough.

The party keeps the creature occupied while Fars works it down. Melith unleashes powerful magic, including a barrage of conjured daggers. The heroes surround the custodian with steel, spells and insults while repeatedly reminding one another not to accidentally steal the final hit.

Eventually the moment comes.

Fars lands the killing blow.

The Lunar Custodian falls, and the corruption in the shard breaks.

For the first time since he picked it up, Fars is free of the curse. The fragment no longer drains his health. The expedition has succeeded.

Then Melith screams.

She collapses into a catatonic state, eyes rolled back, unresponsive to voices, touch or magical examination. Physically she appears healthy. Whatever was taken from her was not simply blood or strength. Something about the ritual has left her body present while her consciousness — or some part of her essence — is gone.

The celebration ends immediately.

The Old Dudes now have to carry Melith home.

The return trip to Shade Karn takes several days and is not entirely peaceful, but the group makes it back with Melith and Nulan. At the Umbra Lysum, the scholars take charge of her care and promise to investigate what happened.

The moon shard has been cleansed.

The person who helped cleanse it has not recovered.

After rest, the party returns to Bravaro.

He has made progress on the bloody encrypted message recovered from the dead courier.

The phrase “Turn the bell. Cut the rope.” is not poetry. It is procedure. In Lethadia, bells can communicate authority and signals. Turning or changing the bell suggests a deliberate signal. Cutting the rope suggests preventing anyone from undoing what has been set in motion.

Bravaro has also decoded the remaining name.

Gregor.

More specifically, Sergeant Gregor Ironwill Thorne, second in command to High Marshal Kalin Stonefist, one of the powerful figures tied to the Pentarchy.

The campaign suddenly shifts from ancient ruins to political conspiracy.

Fars scouts Gregor's home in the Glimmering Heights while the rest of the group follows another thread from Bravaro. They visit Moss and Myrr, an herbalist shop run by Oma Val, hoping she can tell them more about the black ichor found on the lizardfolk.

Val refuses to guess without a sample. Bring her some ichor, she says, and she can involve researchers at the Umbra Lysum.

Wenende makes an insight check and gets the uncomfortable feeling that Val is holding something back. Nothing dramatic. Nothing he can name. Just enough to remember.

Zayon also visits a temple of Varian and asks for information about restoring corrupted holy places. He comes away with two books: The Unbounded Ground, dealing with reconsecrating sites, and Beneath the Banner, describing the ideals and ranks of Varian's faithful.

By the end of the episode the party has traded one emergency for three new mysteries.

Melith lies catatonic.

Gregor may be involved in a plot hidden inside the highest levels of Shade Karn.

And the black ichor still needs to be understood.

The Old Dudes decide the next reasonable step is to investigate Gregor's house.

Which is another way of saying they are considering burglary in one of the most heavily protected districts in the city.

Fars survived the moon shard.

Now the party is about to see whether it can survive politics.
